there's just something wrong

Tram was telling me something this morning. "Have you heard?"
I lifted up my head.
First she gave a nervous laugh, constantly present in her talk. Then she said something. Her heavy accent masked the words and I lifted my eyebrows in confusion, "Hmmm?"
"Oh never mind..."

Then about eight hours later, I heard. I was bouncing out of Philosophy. During the previous 1.5 hours of lecture, I had occupied myself with attempting to see how the simple touch of skin could elicit such a current of electricity. That's one reason that I was able to keep myself awake. As I was walking past the bike stand, someone called my name. And so it was Eddy.
I turned and walked over. "...didn't feel like joining triple A.."
Somehow he was able to change that conversation from AAA to the terrorist attack that occured this morning. "But it was so bad today!"
Yeah, that's how he changed the topic. I nodded my head and listened to him rant about how horrible it was. Deep inside, I felt guilty about my apathy. He was shocked that I didn't hear. "You're ignorant! Well, sheltered..."
It's not my fault that my professors aren't the outspoken type...or the ones that would cancel class for a national emergency.

Nonetheless, shortly after, I began feeling more apathetic. Yesterday at my CA interview, I had noted that the only way to make a person calm down was to understand (be sympathetic) why he or she was acting in that manner. It's that "see what happens when you're in their shoes" thing. Although Osama Bin Laden, one of the main suspects of the attack, claimed that he wasn't involved, he observed that thousands of Palestians have died in the Israeli conflicts and the US hasn't done a single thing except support Israel. That also reminded me of a contradiction that had struck me a few years ago. Americans will always care about the single incident, a single seemingly important incident...while we always constantly ignore the thousands that die each year of smoking...or ignore the millions that die of starvation every year. And that fact did bother me. Thousands don't put a dent on our rising population. It makes for sensational news. Or for that matter, it brings instant change. Yet, it never brings back the ones that we lose.

But later on as I watched for the news on our clumsy TV (yes, my roommate decided to bring one), I was truly horrified. I must admit the entire situation seemed like a movie. But then...I saw individuals speaking to the camera. Their words were heartbreaking. I suppose then...the sympathy is well deserved. And perhaps, the horror as well.

I want to know though. Who really are the evil ones?
