to you. a draft.

Hi.

I am uncomfortable within your presence. You don\’t understand my sense of humor. You don\’t understand me. This is one of the most important things in a friendship with me.

The first day I met you, I realized from the moment we started walking that this would be a very unequal friendship. You talk so much about your experiences, your life. It does not feel mutual. Do you realize that I don\’t care?

The day you asked me to dinner, I was very insulted when you told me that you thought dinner was so much better. Please. I am a geek and you need to respect that.

I don\’t appreciate your long lectures. I don\’t appreciate you being so fervent about one subject. Is that why you have so much trouble adjusting to American life? I know others who are internationals and why is it such a big deal that there is a difference in cultures? Come on now, you better return to where you are from. It\’s better for you there if you can\’t adjust and can\’t accept life here.

Stop being so headstrong. It\’s not fitting with my style.

I am sorry, but I don\’t think I can continue this friendship with you. You make me feel like I have to do things for you and I don\’t appreciate it at all.

You\’re not funny.

God, now I feel like hating your guts. I am being so immature about it.

parts bolded that pissed me off:
8:50:18 PM him: though I didn\’t like the other one either
8:50:29 PM him: the strips on the wall
8:50:31 PM me: oh why not?
8:50:35 PM me: you mean sonicband?
8:50:44 PM him: yes. I wouldn\’t like all my walls covered in strips YOU ARE NOT THE TARGET USER!
8:50:58 PM me: haha but are you a young modern
8:51:03 PM me: i think it\’s a nice idea
8:51:07 PM him: yeah they kep repeating that
8:51:14 PM me: you don\’t need the strips everywhere
8:51:16 PM him: I don\’t think it was a good idea
8:51:23 PM me: haha
8:51:26 PM me: what would you have suggested
8:51:33 PM me: their breathing concept was cool
8:51:46 PM him: you could do the same thing with much smaller things mounted on walls
8:51:47 PM me: too bad breathing isn\’t associated with music
8:51:54 PM me: smaller strips?
8:52:06 PM him: not strips at all. buttons mybe
8:52:14 PM me: buttons?
8:52:20 PM him: as you can see, I give much more importance to functionality
8:52:24 PM me: haha now i can tell why you\’re not in hci
8:52:29 PM him: rather than aesthetics
8:52:38 PM me: we are addressing the emotional needs
8:53:13 PM him: that\’s the problem. You are trying to address the emotional needs with materials Why are you acting like you\’re an expert?!??!?!?
8:53:24 PM him: I don\’t think this is correct THIS IS NOT AN OPINION! you don\’t even acknowledge my reasons, but of course you don\’t take time to understand my reasons.
8:53:41 PM me: an emotional need as in…what kind of uses people need with their music
8:53:46 PM me: like the form factor
8:53:55 PM me: does something large satisfy their need
8:53:58 PM me: or something small
8:54:12 PM him: but then you come to the point of functionality
8:54:20 PM me: this is a huge point in design
8:54:25 PM him: and these large strips are completely unnecessary
8:54:25 PM me: emotional design
8:54:33 PM me: haha
8:54:40 PM me: you are contradicting all their research
8:54:47 PM me: the idea is that they can walk throughout the room
8:54:52 PM me: and still control the music
8:55:03 PM him: so I couldn\’t clearly understand that
8:55:04 PM me: fully integrated
8:55:11 PM me: without having to walk to the player
8:55:15 PM me: it would be on the wall itself
8:55:17 PM him: will that strip be all over the wall?
8:55:20 PM me: yes
8:55:26 PM me: so one whole wall would have a strip
8:55:28 PM him: this is completely disturbing stop that! you cannot comment on something you have no idea about!
8:55:33 PM me: wait why??
8:55:34 PM him: you have futons
8:55:38 PM him: you have bed
8:55:43 PM him: you have couch
8:55:44 PM me: you can mount the strips higher
8:55:57 PM me: and the idea is that if you\’re sitting, you can just reach behind you to touch the strip
8:56:04 PM me: no need to find a remote
8:56:23 PM him: well having a remote is not that difficult
8:56:27 PM me: is it?
8:56:28 PM me: you lose it
8:56:34 PM him: get ten remotes in the house At this point, I wanted to whack him with a huge dosage of hci. hello!??!?! ten remotes call for bad usability. argh!
8:56:34 PM me: you have all the buttons on the remote
8:56:35 PM him: you are done
8:56:37 PM me: nooo
8:56:43 PM me: oh god, you\’re so not a designer
8:56:48 PM him: I am not
8:57:04 PM him: I wouldn\’t like my walls covered with those strips
8:57:11 PM him: it is just annoying
8:57:26 PM him: if it is covering so much area, it should do more than adjusting the music
8:57:44 PM me: a mantra of hci
8:57:45 PM me: is
8:57:52 PM me: \”i am not the user\”
8:58:12 PM me: \”the user is not me!\”
8:58:20 PM him: if you are not the user, you just propose something and do not really care if it is useful or not IT IS USEFUL! you just don\’t get it…why don\’t you give them a benefit of doubt.
8:58:29 PM him: why then getting opinions?
8:58:34 PM him: of so many people?
8:58:46 PM him: you should have empathy you don\’t understand at all…
8:59:14 PM me: wait
8:59:21 PM me: didn\’t you realize that a lot of research went into this
8:59:27 PM me: each group conducted shadowing
8:59:29 PM me: user interviews
8:59:31 PM me: then
8:59:37 PM me: they presented these concepts to a focus group
8:59:48 PM him: I don\’t deny the hard work
8:59:53 PM him: it is a lot of hard work
8:59:56 PM me: i am saying
9:00:02 PM me: that they did ask the users
9:00:07 PM him: I am just saying my opinion, and I am not the expert
9:00:20 PM him: I am not even the focus group of two of those groups
9:00:29 PM him: so it is just my opinion
9:01:34 PM him: I am not the one to judge them
9:01:35 PM me: ok
9:02:20 PM him: I guess I managed to piss you off 🙂
9:02:31 PM him: you seem to be disappointed
